Global Issue - Future of Antarctica

1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THIS GLOBAL ISSUE:

WHAT IF QUESTIONS??
  • What if there was no Antarctica?
  • What if Global Warming affected Antarctica?
  • What if Antarctica melts in 20 years time?

WHY THE WORLD SHOULD CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ANTARCTICA!!pasaantarctica.jpg
The world should care about the future of Antarctica because Antarctica is an important part of our world. The continent lies at the hub of our planet's weather system, and the turbulent air above it acts as a giant pump that helps circulate air masses around the earth, and acts as sunscreen for Earth- the snow and ice reflects light (heat). It is also a clean lab - the best place for monitoring the overall condition of earth's air, for seeing what we are doing to our planet. It is also the last place on earth where we can find natural resources which are being consumed in our everyday life.

(Who does it affect? Where is it occurring? What proportion of the world is affected or will be affected in the future)
2. WHY DO WE CONSIDER THE FUTURE OF ANTARCTICA TO BE A GLOBAL ISSUE!!
We consider the 'Future of Antarctica' to be a global issue because it a continent with many natural resources that the world could use but figuring out when and how is the question. pasaseals.jpgWe also consider it to be a global issue because if it completely melts, water levels around the world will go up, creating a "hurricane Katrina effect". Temperatures worldwide will go up because Antarctica would no longer reflect sunlight.

3. What are some of the different opinions/perspectives on the issue? (Give examples, evidence and pictures to support your answers above)

4. Why are there different opinion/perspectives on the issue? (Give examples, evidence and pictures to support your answers above)

5. What are your individual opinions on the issue? (each group member comments about this)

6. What are some of the solutions to solve this global issue?
A big "overall" solution to solve this global issue is to go green! That can be as simple as taking public transport/walking to your destination instead of taking the car, or eating at least one meat-free meal a week. Both of these two simple solutions are ways to emit less carbon dioxide into the air, the main reason for global warming, which is causing Antarctica to melt.

7. Who should carry out the solution(s)?
All citizens of this planet should carry out the solutions, because that is the only way to truly make a difference.

8. Imagine your group is in charge of deciding what the world should do about the issue. Brainstorm the ways that you would solve your global issue. Justify your choice. (You will need to work together on this)
